ETSU’s recycling efforts are paying off. From January-July of this year, ETSU recycled over 105 tons of materials, including aluminum, plastic, cardboard, scrap metal and office paper. In addition, ETSU Recycling has recently started collecting printer cartridges and batteries. The recycling rate was 17.08 percent – almost double the rate of last year.
This progress is especially noteworthy since it comes at a time when ETSU is reducing paper use on campus.
Many new recycling bins are in place around campus, including 10 purchased with ETSU Student Sustainability Fee funds.
As part of a pilot project, bins have been installed in Centennial Hall and Lucille Clement Hall, with plans to expand the program to all residence halls.
Eight work-study students from ETSU Facilities Management are assigned to assist with pickup and sorting.
Their job is made easier since the Student Sustainability Fee provided ETSU Recycling with funds for the new center, a baler, and an electric vehicle.
Individuals can drop off recyclables at a convenient main recycling center located near the Basler Challenge Course on campus.
