The ETSU Family Medicine Associates and University Health Services have collaborated to give ETSU students access to seasonal flu shots. The program took effect on Monday, Sept. 28. The vaccine is available to students, faculty and staff and members of the Johnson City community. “We’ve seen more faculty and staff thus far than students, but we still have a while to go, so we hope to see more students take advantage,” said Michelle Goodman, RN and supervisor of ETSU Family Medicine Associates.
According to Goodman, the process is quite an efficient one. Depending on the volume of patients, the administration of the vaccine could easily be completed during a student’s lunch break.
“It takes no more than 10 or 15 minutes, plus the time to fill out paperwork,” Goodman said. Students do not need proof of insurance or medical forms of any kind on hand. They don’t even need their student identification cards in order to receive the vaccine.
“All they have to do is fill out some information for our records and pay the $25 fee,” Goodman said. “The form is brief – just basic information. Once that is complete, we can administer the vaccine.”
While the program took effect on Sept. 28, Goodman indicated that there is no exact date as to when the Family Medicine Associates will cease to administer flu shots.
The center will continue to offer the vaccine to patients for as long as supplies last, “We usually stock up with the anticipation of serving as many people as we did the year before,” Goodman said. “This year we have enough vaccinations to administer to approximately 600 patients.”
The seasonal flu vaccines will be administered at the ETSU Family Medicine Associates, located at 917 W. Walnut St.
The vaccine will cost students, faculty and staff $25, and payment will be accepted in the form of cash, credit/debit or check. The vaccine takes approximately two weeks to take effect and will last up to one year.
