Dr. Chih-Long Hu will perform in concert at East Tennessee State University on Friday, Oct. 23, at 7:30 p.m. in Mathes Hall. His performance is the second of seven concerts in the Department of Music’s Chopin 200 series and is also part of the ongoing Powell Piano Series at ETSU, which is designated as an All-Steinway School.
The Chopin 200 series is a year-long celebration focusing on the life and music of the beloved Polish composer and pianist Frédéric Chopin (1810-1849) in the 200th year since his birth.
Concerts will include solo works, chamber music and concertos centered on Chopin, presented by guest, faculty and student artists. Each concert will be preceded by a short lecture on topics related to the composer.
These talks will be given by pianists, singers, composers and musicologists.
The Powell Piano Series began in the fall of 2007 in honor of Jim and Sandy Powell and is dedicated to the advancement of solo piano performance by outstanding national and international artists.
Hu will perform Chopin’s miniature “24 Preludes” and his monumental “Sonata No. 3.” Also featured in the program is the world premiere of Dr. Maria Niederberger’s “Homage É Frédéric Chopin,” a set of three impromptus for solo piano.
Hu, an assistant professor of piano in the ETSU Department of Music, has performed extensively as a soloist, recitalist and chamber musician in Asia, Europe and North America. He has released one album, “Formosa Caprices,” through Blue Griffin Recording Inc., and two other solo albums featuring works by Ravel, Stravinsky and Rachmaninov.
Hu joined the ETSU faculty in August 2006 and holds a D.M.A. degree from the University of Michigan and his B.S. and M.F.A. degrees from Taipei National University.
Niederberger, an acclaimed composer and ETSU professor of music, will present the pre-concert talk, “Hats Off to Genius,” at 7:10 p.m.
Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students and seniors, and are available both in advance and at the door. For tickets, more information, or special assistance for those with disabilities, call the ETSU Department of Music at 423-439-4276.
