In its final fall tournament of the season, the ETSU women’s tennis team closed out action with two wins Sunday at the 2009 St. Mary’s Tennessee Classic at the Varsity Tennis Courts in Knoxville. With the fall season over, head coach Steve Brooks and his team look ahead to the 2010 spring season.

Sophomore Karina Kedzo picked up the first ETSU victory of the day after outlasting Middle Tennessee State’s Marietta Bigus 6-0, 2-6, 6-2.

“Karina played better today,” said head coach Steve Brooks. “After her strong start I thought she got away from a couple of things in the second set, but then recovered well to take the third.”

Freshman Diana Navrostska, also joined the winning ways as she won with a three-set 6-3, 6-7, 6-3, victory over Middle Tennessee State’s Natalie Araya.

“Kelly played really well in singles this afternoon,” Brooks said. “I’m proud of how she was able to keep her composure after Araya was able to survive the tiebreaker in the second set. Momentum is such a bigger factor in tennis. It was good to see Kelly stayed focused and recapture the energy late in the match.”

Senior Yevgenyia Stupak, sophomore Paula Jaime, and junior Andra Voniea all fell in close three-set singles contests.

“Overall, this weekend was a good tournament,” said Brooks. “MTSU, Vandy, Tennessee and Wake (Forest) are all good nationally-ranked opponents. We still have a ways to go with some conditioning and such at this level, however I thought the girls have improved steady throughout this fall. Now with this part of our season over, we are going to get back to work in practice and get ready for the upcoming spring schedule.
