Sanitizer encouraged to prevent H1N1

Students living on campus might have noticed a new addition to their dormitories. Germstar hand sanitizer dispensers have been recently installed in high traffic areas in residence halls on the ETSU campus.

This decision was mandated by Dr. Bonnie Burchett, director of the Department of Housing and Residence Life. Burchett’s decision was motivated by the onset of the H1N1 virus and the beginning of the flu season.

“The university developed a pretty elaborate plan for any type of pandemic,” Burchett said. “We’re concerned about prevention and reducing risk of illness when students come into contact with people.”

Burchett consulted with area coordinators of residence halls on campus and asked them about the best locations to install the Germstar dispensers.

The result was the installation of 20 Germstar hand sanitizer dispensers in nine residence halls and in the Buc Ridge clubhouse. The dispensers are strategically located in common areas such as front desks, offices, high traffic entrances and elevator lobbies.

While money is an issue that remains at the forefront of the university’s agenda, Burchett explained that especially with the onset of the H1N1 virus, the university is taking realistic strides to protect students’ health, even if it means spending money.

Burchett believes that the installation of the Germstar machines is one of those effective, realistic strides.

“Anything that we can do that is practical and reasonable to help reduce the spread of the flu or any disease, we’re willing to do it,” Burchett said. “If we can prevent illness, it will be worth the investment. We felt like it was time. It was feasible and affordable, and if it’s not H1N1, it will be something else next time.”

Burchett insists that the Germstar machines are here to stay.

“We plan to keep them and custodial staff will fill them,” she said.

The custodial staff of the residence halls will monitor the machines and keep track of how often they have to refill them in order to decide whether installation of more machines in the future is necessary.
