The world premiere of “Sojourn,” a work for solo clarinet by composer Dr. Clare Shore, will be the highlight of a free public recital to be held Sunday, Feb. 28, at ETSU.Immediately before the premiere, which begins the second half of the program, Shore and Eugene Jones, instructor of clarinet in the ETSU Department of Music, will give a brief lecture and performance preview of the piece.

Shore, the second woman to earn the doctor of musical arts degree in composition from the Juilliard School in New York, has received critical acclaim for her works, as well as numerous commissions, awards and grants, including a Composer Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts.

She has taught at Fordham University, the Manhattan School of Music, the University of Virginia, George Mason University and Palm Beach Atlantic College.

Shore’s appearance is made possible by a “Meet the Composer” grant from MetLife Creative Connections.

The recital begins at 3 p.m. in Mathes Hall with a trio for clarinet, cello and piano by Johannes Brahms. The program will conclude with Leonard Bernstein’s “Sonata for clarinet and piano.”

Joining Jones in the performance are ETSU music faculty and accompanists Cherylonda Fitzgerald on cello and pianists Craig Combs and Ann Jones.
