The Johnson City roller derby team, The Little City Roller Girls, won their first bout of the season against Charleston, S.C., Lowcountry Highrollers Sunday night in the Farm and Home Building of the Appalachian Fairgrounds. “This win is definitely a great start to the season,” said coach “Chick Norris.” The Little City Roller Girls beat the Lowcountry Highrollers last season in September with a six-point lead.
The first period of the bout started off with Lowcountry’s “Green-eyed Sniper” beating Little City Roller Girls’ “Noli Chuck Ya” to the front. Lowcountry controlled the first four jams accumulating a 16-point lead.
During Jam 5 “Noli” assumed the lead jammer position. “Rock Nasty” followed up with another successful lead before being penalized in jam seven. The next six jams of the period were a power struggle with Lowcountry remaining in the lead. “Impress Into Ya” earned 10 points in Jam 15 closing the gap between the two teams.
After the intermission the game intensified. The Little City Roller Girls controlled most of the jams and cut off the Lowcountry Highrollers in Jam 16 with a six-point lead.
As the clock was running out the Little City defense scrambled to keep the Lowcounty from scoring.
In last jam of the period “Noli” was thrown in the penalty box, leaving “Green-eyed Sniper” the only jammer on the floor. When one team has a jammer and the other doesn’t this is called a powerjam and the Little City Roller Girls are left with only their defense to hold off the competition. The Lowcountry Highrollers earned five points in the powerjam, but it only gave them a final 100 points compared to the Little City Roller Girls 102.
The announcer Shannon Brown, also known as “Big Daddy Voodoo”, asked the crowd at the end of the bout to raise their hands if this was their first bout. Many raised their hands including Kyle Fleener, an ETSU student. “This has definitely been a lot of fun and it’s not too hard to understand,” said Fleener. “I plan to attend another home game in the future.”
The next match for The Little City Roller Girls is April 24 against the Blue Ridge Roller Girls in the Asheville Civic Center of Asheville, N.C. For more information on the Little City Roller Girls go to www.littlecityrollergirls.com.
