East Tennessee State University will present Eve Ensler’s “The Vagina Monologues” April 8-10 at the VA Memorial Theatre at 7:30 p.m. each evening. The production is part of a series of V-Day 2010 events, a global initiative aimed at stopping violence against women and girls. Proceeds from the show will benefit Safe Haven Center, which provides therapy and other support services for victims and survivors of sexual assault.Ensler wrote “The Vagina Monologues” in 1996 after she conducted interviews with more than 200 women regarding their views on sex, relationships and violence against women. The show opened off-Broadway in October 1999 and ran for 1,381 performances.

“The Vagina Monologues” features a series of monologues that are delivered by different members of the all-female cast. The ETSU student cast includes Britny Fox, Valisa Griffin, J.J. McCullough, Elizabeth Phelps, Madison Shallcross, Rebekah Shibao, and Angela Stanbrough.

The show is co-directed by Camielle Reed, an ETSU sophomore theater and dance major, and Dr. Amber Kinser, chair and professor of the ETSU Department of Communication.

Other V-Day events benefiting Safe Haven, which is located in Jonesborough, include a donation drive and an all-male bake sale.
