What do you get when you bring the best photography, visual effects and 3D modeling student work from the Digital Media department to one place? You get the annual Edge art show, sponsored by the Edge club of ETSU. This annual art show features animation, 3D Modeling, level design, video effects, photography and digital illustration.
Students from the Digital Media department were able to send in multiple submissions of their best work about a month before the show with a fee of $2 per submission, with discounts for multiple submissions.
The work was judged on Thursday, April 8 by Jason Stansell, a graduate of the Digital Media department from 2002, who now works as an animator for Sony. Awards were given at the show on Friday, April 9.
The show was on display for a week and was open to the public at The Charles, located in downtown Johnson City.
The Edge club puts on this show every year, but this year seemed to have one of the biggest turnouts in recent years.
Current students, faculty members and alumni came out to enjoy the displayed artwork, complimentary beverages and hors D’oeuvres on Friday.
Marty Fitzgerald, the head of the Digital Media department, said that inviting alumni to the Edge show this year could have been one of the factors in its success.
“It was new to invite the alumni,” said Fitzgerald. “Many of the former students come in and think about how the technology and students are so far ahead from when they graduated.”
Having the opportunity to come to their old department and see new developments proved to be a unique experience for the alumni.
The show is also good for current students, who are presented with this opportunity so that they may show off their work to members of the community, peers and vendors. “[The show] is a good experience for students to show their artwork,” said Fitzgerald.
Steven Buono submitted six entries and had one win third place. “In my words, you’re stupid not to [submit in the show.],” said Buono. “Vendors come out, and you never know who’s going to be there to look at your work.”
Anna Seaver, who has been president of the Edge club since last fall, said that the show had “one of the biggest turnouts. In the past, alumni haven’t been involved, but this year they were and Marty is to thank for that.” Overall, Seaver said she has enjoyed in the Edge club and being president, although admits being the president of a club whose department is work intensive sometimes results in little sleep.
