Editor’s note: This is the third and final column in the series. Prior articles were published April 19 and April 15. With the NFL draft almost here, we will take a look at the selections after the top 10. These selections can be very important for teams as some of the top players in the NFL were selected in this part of the first round.
Players like Adrian Peterson in Minnesota and Chris Johnson in Tennessee were both selected in the mid-to-late first round. Now that we can see the quality of players that are available, let’s see what happens.
11. Denver Broncos-Dez Bryant/WR/Ok. St.
Just days ago the Broncos traded their No. 1 receiver Brandon Marshall to the Miami Dolphins, effectively ruining the mock draft that I had put together at that time.
Still the Broncos are without a reliable receiver for quarterback Kyle Orton so Bryant seems like the best choice for them at this spot. Bryant has good speed and can make plays happen when he’s got the ball. He does need to run his routes better and to go 100 percent each play. In college, he would sometimes act too laid back on particular plays. Bryant also has labeled with having off-the-field issues.
12. Miami Dolphins-Dan Williams/DT/Tennessee
Williams, a 6-2, 327-pound defensive tackle, will be the Miami Dolphins new nose tackle and he would be a great fit at that spot. He can shed blocks very well and get to the quarterback. Most importantly though he can drive offensive lineman backward, which will be very important in Miami’s 3-4 defense.
13. San Francisco 49ers-Mike Iupati/OG/Idaho
The 49ers are looking for help on the offensive line and Iupati can be the immediate answer that San Francisco is looking for. He’s a quick lineman whose got great footwork and can drive defensive lineman and linebackers backward on running plays. This is great news for the 49ers as they are looking for blockers to open up running lanes for halfback Frank Gore. Coach Mike Singletary likes to build very physical teams and adding Iupati will allow this team to take another step in that direction.
14. Seattle Seahawks-C.J. Spiller/HB/Clemson
With the Seahawks second first round selection they will add running back C.J. Spiller. Spiller has electrifying speed and if he gets the ball in open field, he can go into second gear and run by everyone. He can also play on special teams and be a threat as a kickoff returner.
Seattle does not really have a reliable running back so they will ask Spiller to be their feature back. This could be problematic as the Clemson running back did have some nagging injuries in 2009.
15. New York Giants-Brandon Graham/DE/Michigan
The Giants defense needs a boost in 2010 and Graham will give them the boost they need. Graham has great speed for a defensive end and will try to outrun the offensive lineman on the edge.
While this is Graham’s strength, it is his weakness also. Sometimes Graham can run past the ballcarrier, taking him out of the play. He needs to do a better job of controlling his momentum and going towards the play. The Giants will love the speed and the effort that Graham gives.
16. Tennessee Titans-Jason Pierre-Paul/DE/South Florida
Pierre-Paul is 6-5, 270 pounds, and, for someone that big, has great speed. With coaching, he will help the Titans get the pass rush they are looking for.
Fortunately for Pierre-Paul, the Titans defensive line coach Jim Washburn does a wonderful job of developing players. Pierre-Paul will remind Tennessee of a young Jevon Kearse and with Tennessee playing against Indianapolis and Houston two times each, the Titans will need a consistent pass rush and Pierre-Paul will be able to do that every play.
