After being held to only one-hit in a 3-0 loss in game one, the Lady Bucs had revenge on their minds in the nightcap against USC Upstate Sunday afternoon. However, with ETSU leading 2-0 through five innings, the Spartans scored four runs in the sixth and USC Upstate capped off the sweep with a 4-2 victory from Cyrill Stadium. The Lady Bucs, who were looking to play spoilers by ruining the Spartans’ chance of making the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament next month, dropped to 18-34, 5-15. Meanwhile, Upstate improved to 35-12, 10-8.
Morgan Childers outlasted junior Jessica Duncan in a classic pitcher’s duel as the Spartan hurler tossed her 14th shutout of the season and USC Upstate took game one, 3-0.
Childers improved to 29-5 after tossing the one-hit blanking while striking out nine. Duncan suffered the loss (8-8) despite allowing three runs on six hits in 5.2 innings.
Both teams were held scoreless for the first five and a half innings, but pinch hitter Jenna Torbert led off the bottom of the sixth with a solo shot, and that would be all the offense Childers would need to earn the win. The Spartans tacked on two more runs to extend their lead to 3-0.
Despite holding a two-run lead through the first five innings, ETSU didn’t have enough left in the tank, as USC Upstate used a four-run sixth to rally past the Lady Bucs, 4-2, in the nightcap at Cyrill Stadium.
ETSU out-hit the Spartans 7-6, but the Lady Bucs left seven runners stranded in the game.
Both teams were held scoreless for the first three innings, but with one out and Schneider on second, Henderson drove in her teammate with an RBI single through the left side. The Lady Bucs would tack on another run in the next inning thanks to Schneider’s two-out RBI single down the line in left – putting ETSU ahead 2-0 – but the Spartans would have the final say so in the contest.
ETSU returns to action when the Lady Bucs host Western Carolina in non-conference action Wednesday evening. First pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 5 p.m. at the ETSU Softball Complex.
