ETSU officials today introduced the logo that will be used during the university’s centennial. The celebration will begin in the fall of 2010 and culminate in the fall of 2011, when ETSU turns 100.In the fall of 2009, the university conducted a centennial logo design contest, open to all faculty, staff and students. Members of the Centennial Steering Committee judged the 25 entries in late February of 2010 and selected Amy Light-Karlsson’s design as the winner.

A freelance graphic designer, Light-Karlsson, of Kingsport, based her design on the university’s mountain logo, which has been in use since its creation by ETSU alumnus Richard Maxey in 1988.

The new logo incorporates the centennial theme, “Partnerships, Promise, and Hope for a Hundred Years: East Tennessee State University, 1911-2011.”

Light-Karlsson, a student in the master of arts in teaching program at ETSU, says she plans to apply the $1,911 cash prize toward her educational expenses. The master’s degree she is now completing will be her second.

In 2000, she earned a master of science in engineering design technology from ETSU, after completing a bachelor of fine arts at the university in 1997.

Light-Karlsson won an ETSU Advanced Visualization Lab Award for Outstanding Design Performance in 2000.

In 1997, she was inducted into the ETSU Student Leader Hall of Fame and was named Greek Woman of the Year for her work with the Alpha Delta Pi sorority.

Today’s logo unveiling was held in the parlor of Carter Hall, one of the original campus buildings dating from 1911.

East Tennessee State University opened its doors as East Tennessee State Normal School on October 2, 1911, when 29 students registered. Enrollment now approaches 15,000.
