Being a freshman at ETSU means having opportunities to get involved in numerous activities that enhance your college career. A person simply has to consider all the possibilities and opportunities that are now available, much like opportunities that were given in high school.

All of the countless hours of study, clubs, friends and even sports show new ETSU students that their start with a new school will offer a completely different way of life.

Efficient study habits, clubs and meeting new friends are straight forward ways to get involved. However, getting involved in sports can prove to be more difficult.

Sports are obviously competitive when a game starts, but earning a spot on a sports team is extremely competitive. Many campus athletes were chosen from high school to attend ETSU with obligations to fill a spot on a team.

Fortunately, there are things that students can do to raise their chances of getting involved.

Students wanting to get into sports need to get plenty of exposure.

The first step is to make sure that people watch you play your sport. Make sure when people watch you that they will think to themselves just how good you are.

Signing up for intramural sports will allow you to show off your skills and even improve against competition.

When playing a game, a person’s weaknesses can become visible. This is not a terrible thing, just as long as this person works on those weaknesses.

Turning these weaknesses into strengths will develop you into an even better player and when people watch you play again, they will notice the improvements right away.

Signing up with friends can be an even better idea, as there will be better chemistry in the team.

Also, if a student doesn’t have friends that want to sign up with them, they can join a team with people who have the same interests and build friendships. This is a great opportunity for freshmen as well as any student on campus.

This may not seem like that great of an advantage, but ask any coach about how important team chemistry is and they will tell you that no team has won a championship without it.

Not only is teamwork an advantage, it’s crucial. Additionally, it will show people watching how well you play on a team.

Finally, you should try to make friends with the people who are involved in sports. They have the understanding of what it takes to make it. These people work tirelessly to make sure their bodies are conditioned enough to handle the demands of college sports.

Knowing how to work hard is absolutely vital to a person’s college career. If they do not have it, they will not last long.

With it, however, they will have the tools to not only stay on the team, but to become an impact player that will contribute to the team for years.

If someone wants join intramurals, that opportunity is wide open and not as challenging as trying to join an official sports team at ETSU.

For those who want to try to join one, conditioning their body and watching plenty of film of their sport will greatly help their cause.

Getting involved in an intramural sport is important as well, as a person will be able to practice their newly learned moves, strengths and build upon weaknesses.

ETSU students can sign up for an intramural sport at the Center for Physical Activity. There are a variety of intramural sports available on campus like basketball, volleyball, flag football and ultimate frisbee.

The sports world is incredibly competitive and the life of a person’s college career completely depends on their work ethic.
