When I first arrived at ETSU in August of 2008, I was anything but athletic. I was 190 pounds and the idea of taking the stairs up to my fourth floor room at Governors was laughable at best. I took the elevator. A lot. Sports? Walking to my mailbox at my parents’ house was enough exercise for me.Not long after moving to ETSU, I found that despite cutting corners at home, I couldn’t avoid walking to class or climbing stair after stair to get to my fourth-floor film studies class in college. Interestingly enough, after one semester of walking to class and occasionally braving the Basler Center for Physical Activity, I went home for Christmas break 10 pounds lighter and determined to keep it up.
Two years later, my weight has been steady at 125 pounds for more than five months. I practically live at the CPA. I take the stairs. I run 5Ks. By definition, I’m pretty much the picture of athleticism. I’m even about to register and take the course to be a certified personal trainer, which is something I never dreamed of doing.
ETSU sports, Campus Recreation and the CPA helped me change my life. Being the new editor of the East Tennessean Sports section is a real honor for me. Especially since the sports and campus recreation opportunities at ETSU helped me turn my life around and get healthy.
Campus Recreation and the CPA are two wonderful opportunities that ETSU offers students. As the new sports editor, one of my goals this year is to provide as much information as possible about the varied healthy opportunities and privileges students have on campus. This section of the paper will not only focus on the amazing sports and intramural teams we have here at ETSU, but will also focus on ways to stay fit and healthy on campus.
The newly named Sports, Health and Fitness section will be featuring profiles of free fitness classes offered here on campus, spotlights on personal trainers available to students free of charge, advice columns on ways to eat and live healthy on campus and many other athletic and healthy events on campus and within the community.
With the freshman 15, fast food and late nights with often little sleep, being healthy and being a college student can be hard. The staff at the East Tennessean plan to work hard to make this section a go-to guide for everything related to sports, health and fitness on campus.
If you have any sports, health or fitness questions you’d like answered by ETSU athletes, personal trainers, nutritionists or fitness instructors, email us at EThealthyadvice@gmail.com.
