ETSU is celebrating its 100th year of existence, and the intramural program has created a yearlong competition to commemorate this special event.”A lot of other schools do a yearlong cup,” said Tyler Cole, a graduate assistant who is overlooking the first Centennial Cup. “One thing that we really wanted to focus on is that it is not just about winning. It’s not about coming out and winning every sport, it is more about participation. We wanted to encourage students to come out and have a good time.”

The Centennial Cup, created this semester, is awarded to the intramural team that is able to gain the most points throughout the fall and spring semesters. These points are gained by different means. A team can gain points for simply registering for a sport or for winning a particular sport. There are two divisions for the cup. Both men’s and women’s teams have the opportunity to win.

There are 10 sports in which teams can participate in to accumulate points toward winning the cup. The major sports are flag football, soccer, volleyball, basketball and softball. The mid-major sports are kickball, dodgeball, inner tube water polo, ultimate frisbee and 4-on-4 flag football.

A team must fill out a specific roster to participate in the Centennial Cup, and this roster must have a minimum of 10 players with a maximum of 20. The roster must be turned in before the team is allowed to compete for the Centennial Cup.

This will not only be the first year for the Centennial Cup, it will also be the first year for certain sports to be organized on campus: dodgeball, kickball, inner tube water polo and ultimate frisbee.

“This is also another way to get students to try and play new sports,” Cole said. “We tried to diversify the selection of sports. Ultimate frisbee is something that people have been asking for for a while.”

The race for the cup begins in the next couple of weeks. The deadline to register for the first sport, flag football, is Monday, Sept. 13.
