East Tennessee State University’s Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps recently held a contracting ceremony during which eight student cadets were welcomed into the program. Lt. Col. Scott Jeffress, chair of the ETSU Department of Military Science, administered the oath to the newcomers. Collectively, the eight cadets will receive $292,910 in scholarships and awards to cover tuition and expenses for their four years at ETSU. They will be commissioned as U.S. Army second lieutenants upon graduation.

The cadets include:

Miranda Doss is a criminal justice major and the daughter of James and Karen Doss of Chilhowie, Va.

Geoffrey Fowler, son of James and Donna Fowler of Canton, N.C., is a criminal justice major.

Matthew Pencarinha, one of ETSU’s prestigious Roan Scholars, is the son of Michael and Deborah Pencarinha of Kingsport. He is a business student studying management.

Tyler Peterson is majoring in management and marketing. He is the son of Duane Peterson of Telford and Jo Lynn Lane of Jonesborough.

Bryan Ruffo, a former Army Ranger, resides in Kingsport with his wife, Melissa, and daughter, Bryleigh. He is studying criminal justice.

Kurt Stevens is the son of Richard Stevens of Eidson and Joy Stevens of Omaha, Neb.

Hope Travis, daughter of Jeffery and Christina Travis of Indian Trail, N.C., is a criminal justice major.

Nathaniel Ware is the son of Nathaniel and Monica Ware of Knoxville. He is studying sports and leisure management.
