The Lady Bucs hosted the ETSU Soccer Invitational presented by DoubleTree Hotel the weekend of Sept. 10 and had a 1-1 record in the tournament. Their first match against the Temple Owls was the second loss in a row by the Lady Bucs but a double-overtime victory against the Winthrop Eagles ended the streak.ETSU faced the Temple Owls first on Sept. 10 and tried to score early on a quick run right off the kickoff but the ball got away from the Lady Buc offense.
ETSU’s next chance came a few minutes later after Temple had a shot of their own, when Terri Miller had a quick break and shot that was just saved by the Temple goalie.
Temple put the first points of the game on the board when a deflected ball in the ETSU 20-yard box found its way to Temple’s Stephenie Ferretti, who put in the back of the net for a 1-0 Temple lead. ETSU continued to press the Owl defense but were unable to answer in the first half, giving Temple the one-point lead at halftime.
Temple started the second half strong with an early look after a penalty near the ETSU goal but the Lady Bucs goalie Megan Masch was just able to deflect it away. ETSU answered right back with a low corner kick across the goal box that no one was able to put in the back of the net. ETSU continued the assault on Temple but were unable to score before the end of regulation, falling to Temple 1-0.
“Sometimes you are going to start the game and are not going start the game as linked as you should,” said head coach Heather Henson.
The Lady Bucs then faced off against the Winthrop Eagles on Sept. 12 and threatened early on a shot that was just saved by the Winthrop goalie. The Lady Bucs continued to dominate the Eagles but a quick goal byWinthrop’s Tricia Vensel in the 12th minute gave the Eagles a 1-0 lead that rock the Lady Bucs. ETSU’s only chance came on a handball right on the line of the 20-yard box but the Lady Bucs were unable to convert. At halftime the Eagles held a 1-0 lead over ETSU.
The second half began with a bang after Courtney Deem fed the ball to Terri Miller who broke away from the Eagle defense and put the ball in the net for a 1-1 tie game in the first minute. Both teams continued to threaten but went into overtime.
In overtime, after a Eagle penalty near the 20-yard box ETSU was unable to get the ball past the Eagle goalie. Both teams struggled to take shots and were unable to score, sending the game into double overtime.
ETSU ended the game after a cross by Genna Petersen was headed in by Terri Miller in the fourth minute for a 2-1 victory over Winthrop.
“I saw Petersen and I tried to get in the box for a cross,” said Miller. “It was actually a little bit to far for me so I had to dive to get it.”
ETSU improves to four wins, two losses and a tie as they head into the Atlantic Sun Conference to play against the Campbell Camels at home on Sept. 18.
