The ETSU women’s tennis team picked up several big victories at both the ETSU Invitational and the USC Upstate Invitational on Saturday afternoon.”We had a great weekend with many good wins and I was glad to see that the hard work in practice the last several weeks has paid off,” said ETSU women’s assistant coach Travis Sandlandt.
Tara Sheets (Gate City, Va.) won the B flight championship while freshman Giulia Andreazza won the C flight championship. Jessica Ratliff (Bristol, Tenn.) bounced back with a couple of singles victories as well.
On Friday afternoon, the ETSU team played well on the opening day of the ETSU Invitational while other members of the team had a successful day at the USC Upstate Invitational.
“I was very pleased with the way our team performed in their first action of the year,” Sandlandt said.
Diana Navrotska (Kviv, Ukraine) had a strong showing in singles action as she won both of her matches on the afternoon. She first defeated Neesha Thrum of Cumberlands, 7-5, 6-1 before knocking off Kayla Kelly of Milligan, 6-2, 6-2.
Tara Sheets (Gate City, Va.) won her only match Friday as she knocked off Shena Joseph of LMU, 6-3. 6-3. Sheets will play in the B flight finals tomorrow at 12 p.m.
Andreazza won both of her singles matches on the day as she was competing in her first ever collegiate event.
Andreazza also teamed with Jessica Ratliff (Bristol, Tenn.) to earn a quick victory in doubles action. The duo defeated Strong/Collett of Cumberlands, 8-0.
Kelly Holtzhausen (Johannesburg, South Africa) opened up her first round of play with a victory in the A flight singles bracket. Holtzhausen defeated Kelsey Love of Lenoir-Rhyne, 6-1, 6-1.
Karina Kedzo (Puerta Ordaz, Venezuela) defeated Paige Oelke of Presbyterian College, 6-2, 6-0 on opening day.
The Bucs also got a victory from Paula Jaime (Madrid, Spain) in the A flight as she knocked off Alessandra Dzuba of Georgia Southern, 6-1, 6-1. Jaime and Kedzo won their opening round doubles match before falling in the second round.
Voinea and Holtzhausen won their first two doubles matches.
