The ETSU Lady Bucs opened Atlantic Sun Conference play on Sept. 18 against the Campbell Camels. ETSU is coming off a win against Winthrop and looked to continue the streak against Campbell.The Lady Bucs opened the game with a strong offensive against the Camels and had a look on a cross that the Camel goalie was able to break up.
ETSU continued to attack the Campbell goal but an offsides call gave the Camels a chance to push back ETSU. This gave Campbell their first chance of the game. to get a shot on goal to a waiting Campbell player, but ETSU goalie Megan Masch was able to grab the ball.
Campbell remained on the offensive and had an open-goal shot against ETSU but a Lady Bucs defense woman was able to get a leg on the ball and then get the ball out of bounds.
ETSU was the first to put a mark on the board in the 15th minute after a shot by Jessica Huntington bounced off the goalie and found its way to Ramey Kerns, who put the ball in the net for a 1-0 ETSU lead.
“It was exciting to get the jump on Campbell,” Kerns said.
ETSU had another chance after Campbell fouled in the box but the penalty kick hit the post and bounced out. The Lady Bucs kept Campbell off balance on a quick break but the Camel goalie was able to get the ball. At halftime ETSU held on to their 1-0 lead.
Campbell came on strong in the second half putting the Lady Bucs on the defensive but ETSU was able to withstand the onslaught by Campbell. ETSU finally had a chance on the goal after a quick pass by Kelli Brinkman to Kerns who got past the Camel defense and goalie for a 2-0 ETSU lead.
“Kelly saw my open and fed it to me,” Kerns said. “Next thing I know it is just me and the goalie and I slotted it into the corner.”
ETSU continued to pressure the Camels and looked to add to the lead on a shot by Lucy Goffe that sailed just wide of the goal. Campbell looked to answer the ETSU goals on an all-out attack in the waning minutes of the game but the plan backfired on a quick break by Terri Miller whose shot rattled the cross post before being saved by the Camel goalie.
Campbell had one more attempt before the game ended on a beautiful shot that goalie Masch was just able to deflect out of bounds.
ETSU finished the game with a 2-0 win over Campbell for a victory in their first conference game.
“One of our goals for tonight was to win that first 15 minutes of the game,” said coach Heather Henson. “We at least wanted to keep it even, when we went ahead I was even happier.”
ETSU improved to one conference win and five wins overall with two losses and a tie. The Lady Bucs are set to face off against Atlantic Sun rival Lipscomb Friday at 7 p.m.
