Sophomore Aaron Schoenfeld lifted the ETSU men’s soccer team past regionally ranked Marshall 2-1 with an overtime goal Monday night at Summers-Taylor Stadium.”This win was a good result for us against a very determined Marshall team,” said head coach Scott Calabrese.

The Bucs (4-2-0) outshot The Herd (5-1-2) 18-6 in the contest and had a 4-3 advantage in shots on goal, while Marshall led in corners 8-6.

ETSU did not waste any time in taking the lead as Schoenfeld played a ball back to junior Colin Pugh who then buried a shot in the back of the net to give the Buccaneers a 1-0 advantage in the second minute.

Marshall evened the game in the 19th minute on a Jordan Hilgefort shot as he sent a ball from 25 yards out just over the outstretched arms of keeper James Holt into the goal to make the score 1-all.

MU keeper Daniel Withrow made an incredible save in the 25th minute as he deflected an Itode Fubara point-blank shot up over the crossbar to keep the game level.

In the second half, Holt made an incredible save of his own as he just touched a long-range shot from Withrow away from the frame in the 61st minute.

Both teams had chances towards the end of regulation, but neither team could put one on net as the game would go into overtime.

Schoenfeld gave the Buccaneers the win in the 97th minute after Alesi Osorio and Fubara combined to find Schoenfeld open in the box for a header goal to make the final 2-1 ETSU.

“I think sometimes when you take a chance and you put the ball in the box good things happen,” Calabrese said.

The Bucs are back in action on Friday at 7 p.m. as they continue the five-game home stand against UNCA Asheville.
