The ETSU Department of Music will host a “Composers’ Forum: Listen to a Whole New World of Sounds” on Saturday, Oct. 2, at 7:30 p.m. in Mathes Hall. This concert celebrates musical innovation by composers, who often work quietly behind the scenes, much like playwrights who invent screenplays for actors.
Most of the composers whose work will be featured are still living, and some are local or have regional ties.
These composers and the titles of their works to be performed include Phillip Rhodes, a Lake Santeetlah, N.C., resident and former Andrew W. Mellon Professor of the Humanities at Carleton College, Northfield, Minn., who was ETSU’s 2009 chairholder of the Wayne G. Basler Chair of Excellence for the Integration of the Arts, Rhetoric and Science (“Fiddletunes” for solo violin and synthesized strings); the late John Cage, 20th century American composer (“Sonata No. 5” and “The Perilous Night No. 6”); Clare Shore, a Florida composer who became the second woman to earn the doctor of musical arts degree in composition from the prestigious Juilliard School in New York (“Sojourn” for B-flat clarinet); Boston-based composer James Ricci (“Harold in Italy” for alto saxophone and piano); Dr. Maria A. Niederberger, ETSU professor of music (“Homage É Frédéric Chopin”); and Dr. Chih-Long Hu, ETSU assistant professor of music (“Vocalise” for voice and piano).
These works will be performed by ETSU music faculty Jane MacMorran, violin; Eugene Jones, clarinet; Robert Jeter, prepared piano; Dr. Sun-Joo Oh, voice; and Hu, piano, along with student Rachel Cox, saxophone.
Tickets are $10 for general admission, $5 for seniors, and free for students with ID.
