The ETSU women’s volleyball team competed in their second tournament of the season from Sept. 6 to Sept. 7.
The Bucs won two out of the three matches competed in, falling only to Coastal Carolina.
The Coastal Carolina Classic had a change of location due to Hurricane Dorian and took place in Greensboro, North Carolina.
The Bucs played against Charleston Southern University on Sept. 6 and won 3-0 (25-18, 25-16, 25-15). That same day, the team also played South Carolina State, winning 3-0 (25-16, 29-27, 25-7). On Sept. 7, the team played against Coastal Carolina University and lost 2-3 (18-25, 25-22, 15-25, 25-23, 15-18).
“We just need to do a really good job of playing as a team and focusing on our side of the court – buy into the system that we’ve been learning in practice,” said freshman Emily Arnold (Louisville, Kentucky).
The volleyball team went into the Coastal Carolina Classic this weekend with an overall record of 3-0 for the season.
In the Bucs’ first match against Charleston Southern University, senior Kaela Massey ( Brentwood, Tennessee) set her career high with a .684 hitting percentage, and freshman Emily Arnold (Louisville, Kentucky) tied her career high set with 42 assists and added two kills to her line.
“We are just learning and we’re growing as a team, and with my coaching staff as well,” said head coach Benavia Jenkins.
In the second match against South Carolina State, Arnold continued to lead the Blue and Gold with 27 helpers and three kills added to her line. Freshman Sydney Sherrill (Knoxville, Tennessee) finished 3-for-10 with three aces and three blocks.
“We have been doing a good job of connecting and talking to each other in between plays and being a team,” said Arnold. “I think that if we all play together, we will overcome how young we are on the court.”
The Bucs fought a hard match for their last of the classes against Coastal Carolina. The match lasted five sets, with the Bucs losing their grip on the win after a 10-3 deficit in fifth set. The Bucs ended with the Chanticleers getting the upper hand after two straight points on a kill and a block.
The team plays their next tournament Sept. 13-14 in the UAB Tournament in Birmingham, Alabama.
