The women’s basketball team took on the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in Brooks Gym on Feb. 8, but fell to the Spartans 65-45.

The Bucs now have an overall record of 8-16 and a conference record of 3-6

UNCG came out with fire in the first quarter scoring 18 points with the Buccaneers at seven. The second quarter was just as tough with the Spartans draining 11 more points and the Bucs scoring four making the score 29-11 at the half.

“I was thinking that we should be more aggressive, fight back and don’t let up,” said sophomore E’Lease Stafford (Lawrence, Kansas).

Stafford scored the most in the game with 18 points while also playing the most minutes.

“E’lease has done a really good job of working on her game in other aspects and not just on the court,” said assistant coach Ashley Houts. “Any advice she is given she takes to heart and does a great job of applying it.”

The Bucs could not find a rhythm to stay up against the Spartans. The team as a whole struggled to make plays and sink baskets.

“At this point in the year making small adjustments is probably the most important thing,” said Houts. “Practices now we really focus on specifics and really fine-tuning things whether it be our offense, defense or scout team.”

Both times that the Bucs have faced UNCG this season they have been defeated.

“They are a very disciplined team,” said Stafford. “They play within their facility set, and in order to beat them, we have to play smarter and more physical.”

Overall, the Bucs finished 16-47 from the field shooting at 34% and 23.5%. UNCG shot a higher 40% from the field, 42.1% behind the line and a solid 92.9% from the free throw line.

The Buccaneers are headed to Spartanburg, South Carolina, to play Wofford on Feb. 13.
