The women’s tennis team had a rough time during their second home match of the season on Feb. 9. After relocating to the Bristol Racquet Club in Bristol, Tennessee, due to the harsh weather of the previous week, the team lost 4-3 against the VCU Rams.

After a disappointing round of doubles play, the Blue and Gold dominated singles play by winning three of the first four singles matches.

Unfortunately the Blue and Gold were unable to dominate the entire match falling 2-3 in their overall record.

The Rams claimed the doubles play with ease. The Buccaneers managed a 6-2 win at No. 3 thanks to freshman Michelle de Haan (Drenthe, Netherlands) and freshman Maria Carvajal (Queretaro, Mexico) to momentarily tying the play. However, VCU came back by taking No. 2 giving them a 6-4 win.

In singles play the Blue and Gold dominated spots No. 2, 3 and 4, momentarily having the advantage of 3-2. The Rams claimed the No. 5 spot winning the match overall.

Order of finish: doubles (1,3,2); singles (1,4,3,2,6,5)

The men’s team played shortly after the women wrapped up losing their home-opener 4-2.

Scoring two out of three points in doubles action and two out of six in singles, the men’s team fell short of the win. The men now hold an overall record of 1-6.

Their next scheduled match is against Appalachian State Feb. 16 at the Dave Mullins Complex starting at 11 a.m. The game may be moved again to the Bristol Racquet Club pending the weather.

The women’s team will have the majority of the week to practice before heading to Murfreesboro, Tennessee, next weekend. They will play the Cincinnati Bearcats on Feb. 15, and the MTSU Blue Raiders the following day.
