The faculty at ETSU’s College of Public Health received several mentions in the September issue of the American Journal of Public Health.

The AJPH is a monthly peer reviewed magazine that is published by the American Public Health Association. What an honor for us to be featured in this magazine. Coming from a medical family, I have been familiar with this magazine for a very long time and can attest to it being the real deal when it comes to the spreading of information in the medical community in the United States.

The fact that this magazine is checking up on our university is a pretty big deal for us. Living in East Tennessee, it is easy to feel as though we are the forgotten foothills of America, but clearly that is not the case since we are receiving national recognition two months in a row. Not to mention how our health programs at the university have also been renowned.

For the students in the College of Public Health, this recognition is sure to make them more confident in what they are capable of doing since they were selected by the medical school, and ensure them that they are getting their money’s worth as far as their education is concerned.

Back in August, ETSU was one of seven colleges to receive a Rural Health Research Center grant, awarded by the Health Resources & Services Administration’s Federal Office of Rural Health Policy, to create the Center for Substance Misuse in Rural America. This was also mentioned in the AJPH, which will hopefully help us to advance further in the process of eliminating the opioid epidemic in our region.

People are beginning to take the health of rural Americans seriously and we get to experience it first hand.
