The ETSU Department of Music is now offering a weekly Recital Hour every Thursday at 12:45 p.m., until April 29.

These events will be held via YouTube livestream. Performances will include many different areas of ETSU’s Music Department and showcase students’ abilities.

“For this semester, because we’re doing them in the recital hall in the Martin Center, they will only be livestreamed,” ETSU Department of Music Chair Matthew Potterton said. “Eventually they’ll be open to the public. Even when we do them live, they will still be livestreamed.”

With the Martin Center’s construction complete, many of the events scheduled for the new facility have been changed to stay within COVID-19 guidelines.

“The Recital Hour was always planned for the recital hall, we just knew we couldn’t have a live audience because of the COVID regulations,” Potterton said.

Along with COVID-19, these events have gone through many changes to make sure they are safe and accessible, without hindering the students’ experience.

“Obviously so much of music is in in-person and has to be in-person,” Potterton said. “It’s hard to have an ensemble not in-person. Last semester and this semester we’ve done everything we can to make sure our larger ensembles and even our chamber groups can perform.”

Many majors in the ETSU Department of Music require performance grades, and because of that, it was more important than ever to make sure these students had a way to achieve these goals and also impact the ETSU community with their music. Performances during Recital Hours include all students, regardless of instrument or voice.

“I try to get as much variety as possible,” Potterton said. “Ideally we would have one of several instruments. The idea is for all our students can hear each other to help bring our department closer together.”

These events are free and available to anyone via YouTube livestream. To watch previous performances, visit the ETSU Department of Music – YouTube channel.
