On Oct. 15, the ETSU Chorale and ETSU choirs performed in the Grand Hall of the Martin Center.

The East Tennessee Belles, The ETSU Chorale, BucsWorth and Greyscale all performed in this concert. These groups came together for a special performance they entitled “Choral Collage,” which showcased all of the choral groups at ETSU for a one-night performance together. Students have been preparing for this event since the beginning of the semester, and their hard efforts were apparent in their performance.

The concert as a whole had a theme of new beginnings, hope, refuge and joy. They even performed popular pop songs that the crowd knew, such as “Sweet Dreams” originally performed by Eurythmics and “Dynamite” originally performed by Taio Cruz.

The groups also featured various guest instrumental accompaniment. Dr. Ji-Yeon Lee performed as the guest pianist alongside BucsWorth for their performance of “The Beast Flies On,” written by Jacob Narverud. Natalie Lugo was the featured cello player for the East Tennessee Belles performance of “Refuge” written by Elaine Hagenburg.

This performance also featured Herb Parker, a professor from the Department of Theatre and Dance. He read from a moving script that gave the audience a mental picture of what the choirs would be singing about, and how those songs often described several different events in life that people go through.

“It is truly a collage of musical styles and genres that offers a little something for every type of music lover,” said Dr. Alan Stevens, co-director of choral activities in the ETSU Department of Music. “This is also our first opportunity to perform for a full audience in the new Martin Center after our limited audiences last spring.”

The ETSU Choirs will also be performing their Christmas concert in the Martin Center on Saturday, Dec. 4, at 4 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.. Tickets are available on the Martin Center website at https://www.etsu.edu/martin-center/.
