After a win against Chattanooga, the ETSU volleyball team faced an unfortunate defeat by Wofford in the first conference road game ETSU volleyball has lost this fall.
The first set of the match saw a strong start from ETSU’s team. Sara Esposito (Pianigia, Venezia, Italy), Lundyn Coffman (Nolensville, Tenn.) and Josannah Vazquez (Mansfield, Texas) all achieved kills. Vazquez especially performed well, achieving four kills in the first set. An ace in the set was contributed by both Caroline Dykes (Flower Mound, Texas) and Taylor Roberts (Sneads, Fla.).
The second and third sets resulted in a clear Wofford lead with 14 and 12 kills respectively. Junior Samantha Shafer (Franklin, Tenn.) reached three kills, while Coffman achieved two in the second set. Shafer and Vazquez took the four kills ETSU achieved in the third set to conclude the match. The team’s leader in the match as regards kills was decidedly Shafer.
This match marked Wofford’s 10th victory, as they continue to succeed. Unfortunately, it also marks the first time ETSU’s players failed to reach double-digits in kills or digs since 2017. The 26 kills ETSU achieved punctuates the fact that this is ETSU’s first road loss this semester, and it also marks the second lowest kill number this season.
Wofford swept ETSU (21-25, 14-25, 11-25) for their 10th victory of their campaign. This marks the first road conference loss for ETSU this fall, and three straight losses in Spartanburg.
ETSU’s volleyball team continues to push forward as they anticipate playing against Western Carolina on Oct. 22, at 5 p.m. and against UNC-Greensboro on Oct. 23, at 5 p.m. Then, the team will be able to return for some home games.
