On Wednesday, March 30, Jennifer Miller came to campus to discuss the history of “Circus Amok” and the influences of the project.

Circus Amok is a New York City based circus-theater company. They are known for providing free public art that addresses contemporary issues in America. Jennifer Miller is the director and founder of Circus Amok, and the group has been together since 1989.

The company performs in parks and public squares in Brooklyn, the Bronx, Manhattan and Queens. Their performances focus on social issues such as gay marriage, immigration, police brutality, health care and more.

Past shows have included titles such as “The Ozone Show,” “Spies are Us,” “The Survival Show” and their most recent show “Enough is Enough.”

Every four years, the title of the show changes. This means that 2022 should feature a new show from Circus Amok. In 2018, their show “Enough is Enough” featured a story line that showed that everyone thrives when a community is fair and fabulous for all.

On their website, Circus Amok wrote, “Circus Amok invites audiences from all corners of the world into our raging queer utopia, pushing exuberantly at the edges of our drab norms. Join us for the break down, and the shake up.”

Jennifer Miller is the founder of Circus Amok. She is a playwright, performer and the director of the show. She focuses on alternative circus forms, theater, dance and more. Miller is also a professor at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York. Her fantastic circus show has also been a feature in many documentary films as well. She is known to be a bearded lady, and she took her struggles from her early childhood and turned it into a fabulous art and circus show.

The ETSU Department of Theatre and Dance hosted this event, and Ante Ursić organized this talk. To view their upcoming events, visit the Campus Life calendar at https://go.activecalendar.com/etsu/site/students/.
