The ETSU women’s soccer team traveled to Charleston, South Carolina to compete against the Citadel Bulldogs on Monday, Oct. 3. The game had been rescheduled to this date after the effects of Hurricane Ian.

“Our plans to play Friday and Sunday changed, which added about nine hours onto our trip. Our kids were really tired between the travel and playing a man down. They’re tough kids. It’s going to come down to doing simple things and being committed. We had really great performances from multiple players,” said head coach Jay Yelton.

After the first half of the game resulted in no points for either team, sophomore Lindsey Cook (Greenville, Tennessee) scored a goal for the Buccaneers in the second half.

“Our backline, our defensive line and our goalkeepers were not going to let it go in,” said Yelton.

With bad weather conditions and strong winds, the team remained strong and fought against the Bulldogs.

“We certainly needed a lift, and hopefully this gives us some momentum building for us,” said Yelton.

In the final two minutes of the game, the Citadel made multiple shots at the goal in an attempt to score a point, but goalkeeper sophomore Shu Ohba (Fujisawa, Japan) saved all three of the attempts as well as the six saves she made in the first half.

“She made a couple of one-on-one saves. I think she showed a lot of her qualities in the games this weekend,” Yelton added.

Looking ahead to the upcoming weekend, the Bucs will be hosting Virginia Military Institute on Oct. 7 and the University of North Carolina Greensboro on Oct. 9 at Summers-Taylor Stadium.

“Maybe we can get some luck which we all need. For us, we are just going to focus on the next game and everything else will take care of itself, as long as we become better with each opportunity we get,” concluded Yelton.
