On Feb. 1, the ETSU Student Government Association (SGA) announced that Jason Derulo and Rainbow Kitten Surprise would be co-headlining this year’s spring concert.
Rainbow Kitten Surprise is a five-person band that was formed in 2013 out of Boone, North Carolina. Members Ela Melo and Darrick Keller met at Appalachian State University where they wrote and composed music.
The band is widely known for their songs: “It’s Called: Freefall,” “Cocaine Jesus” and “Painkillers.” They perform folk and pop rock songs bringing an eclectic sound to all listeners.
Jason Joel Desrouleaux, also known as Jason Derulo, was born in Miramar, Florida where he began his music career at age 14. The singer has been nominated and won several awards including three Teen Choice awards and one YouTube Music award. Derulo is best known for “Whatcha Say,” “Talk Dirty” and “Ridin’ Solo.”
It comes as a surprise to most to have two performers headlining this year instead of one headliner and two openers.
“We were very fortunate to get not one, but two of the top tier artists that were at the top of the student poll that went out last semester,” said Carter Warden, director of student activities and organizations. “I believe this concert will draw a large crowd since these very popular brands represent two different genres of music and each has a large fan base.”
This year’s concert will be held in the ETSU Mini Dome on Saturday, April 22. Doors will open at 5:45 p.m. with the concert following at 7 p.m.
Tickets will be sold at the Carrier Center on the second floor of the D.P. Culp Center. Students can begin buying tickets on Feb. 15 by using their ETSU ID for one free ticket and can purchase an additional three tickets for $10 each. Staff and faculty can buy four tickets for $10 each starting March 1. Public ticket sales begin March 15 and can be purchased online for $30 plus tax.
