Anthony Salas worked for the East Tennessean from 2018 to 2021. During his time with the publication, he worked as a writer and editor for the arts and entertainment section.

Salas graduated in 2021 with a bachelor’s degree in media and communication.

He is currently working as a production assistant for ESPN Films and The Walt Disney Company out of Bristol, Connecticut. He transcribes interviews, digitizes media, researches for various documentaries and manages, edits and delivers footage and files for filmmakers.

“I took this job because I was putting in all the work of extracurriculars and in class to learn about entertainment and media,” said Salas. “Raina Wiseman, former executive editor [of the East Tennessean], reached out to me about interest in writing for the arts & entertainment section and that was the start of my career in the media industry.”

Salas said the East Tennessean taught him how to effectively communicate through the delivery of information to wide audiences. He also said that the publication showed him how to build relationships by nurturing a web of trusted peers within his section.

“I loved everything about it but there were three things that I remember most: the connection I had to the university by getting to know people across various events, the people working at the East Tennessean becoming another family for me and the events I got to cover like Fluffy or meeting Kareem Abdul-Jabbar,” said Salas.
