Best-selling author David Brooks will be headlining ETSU’s Festival of Ideas. East Tennessee State University’s Festival of Ideas will be held on campus the week of Feb. 27.

ETSU’s Festival of Ideas began in 2019, looking to bring together leaders from the region and beyond to campus to provide an opportunity to share ideas, information and experiences between staff, students, alumni and the community.

The Festival of Ideas is sponsored by the Office of the President, the Office of the Provost and the Division of Student Life and Enrollment.

David Brooks is a New York Times best seller, a bi-weekly op-ed columnist for the New York Times and an analyst for PBS NewsHour. His bestselling book, “The Road to Character,” aims to explain why selflessness leads to greater success.

Brooks teaches a course at Yale University. He also became a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2010. Brooks has also worked for the Atlantic Monthly and The Wall Street Journal.

The Festival will also feature co-hosts of the Pantsuit Politics podcast Sarah Stewart Holland and Beth Silvers. Their podcast has been featured in the New York Times, the Atlantic, Good Morning America and awarded Best Show by Apple Podcasts in 2021.

Stewart and Silvers speak frequently to universities, businesses and civic organizations about improving political dialogue.

This year’s festival also will include a campus-community conversation titled “The Art of Civil Discourse,” featuring a panel of faculty experts. The discussion will be Thursday, March 2, at 11:30 a.m. in the Martin Center for the Arts, Powell Recital Hall.
