Among college students, a common hobby is emerging. More and more students are wanting to get into crocheting, knitting, or sewing, but they don’t know where to go to learn how to do this.
Luckily, the Innovations Commons in the Sherrod Library will host a “Sewing Basics” workshop on Nov. 12 from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m.!
“The sewing basics workshop where students will learn how to use the sewing machine,” said Ariel Adam, Innovation Commons specialist. “At the end of the event, students will create a tote bag.”
The event itself will be led by Kaity Libby, who has been quilting and sewing for years. She has led previous workshops, such as pillow making. The event was suggested by a group asking “what kind of things could be created that would be fun for any level of sewing experience.” The Innovation Commons team is eager to teach students more about crafts and finds it “really fun watching students learn while having fun.”
“Students have been requesting [sewing],” said Adam. “It’s a skill they can take with them.”
The event is only happening once this semester, but it might be returning in the future. Even if there is not a formal event, though, students can reserve the equipment and come through to learn what they might have missed as well as anything they would like to know.
The Innovation Commons has more workshops coming throughout the semester. These workshops include: button making, laser engraving and 3D scanning. These events will run through November 12 to 15.
Students can sign up on the ETSU library website on the Innovation Commons page to register for any workshops.
