It’s that time of year again, Bucs! Next week is spring break. Whether you plan on keeping it lowkey at home or you’ve been counting down the days until you leave for vacation, it’s important to stay safe if you’re traveling.
No matter where you’re going or how you’re getting there, it’s important to travel smart. If you’re driving, make sure your car is ready to go (tires inflated, brakes checked, etc). If you’re flying, ensure you have a REAL ID driver’s license or passport, as well as making sure your luggage is compatible with your airline’s requirements. Regardless of whether your travel plans are with friends or family, make sure your location is being shared with everyone in your group– and don’t forget the buddy system!
Even if your larger group splits up at any point during the trip, having a buddy or two with you, no matter what, is crucial to staying safe in unfamiliar locations. Furthermore, keep yourself even safer by resisting the urge to share your location on social media until you leave that location. It’s an extra step many people don’t realize can keep them extra safe on vacation.
If you’re heading somewhere warm, make sure you’re drinking water and regularly applying sunscreen to prevent dehydration, heatstroke and sunburns. For anyone 21 and up, drink safely. Don’t accept drinks from strangers, or any drinks that smell or look weird. Don’t swim while intoxicated, especially in the ocean. If you’re under 21, don’t drink.
At the end of the day, spring break is a time to have fun and relax from the stresses of the semester, so no matter how you spend it, binge-watching TV for the whole week or lounging at the beach, make sure you enjoy it. Spend time with friends and family, not thinking about that annoying group assignment you have due in April. Enjoy spring break, Bucs, and get some much-needed rest!
