Dear Editor:
I am pleased to note the increased interest on campus in celebrating Memorial Day as an official university holiday.
I have taught a pre-summer class for almost 20 years. I have always observed the holiday by not holding class. I have done so for the simple reason that it is just simply right and proper to take this day to remember those who have served and died for our country.
On this day it is our remembrance of these men and women that is important. The holiday is for us.
It links us with those who have gone before and encourages us to show our gratitude for their service and sacrifice.
It shows us what our country has meant to others and what it should mean to us.
It teaches us that, indeed, no man is an island.
Compared to these, the lessons of any particular school day pale. We should officially take this holiday – “Lest we forget.”
