As the spring semester continues, Sherrod Library has a number of events for students to enjoy. Whether you’re into crafts, poetry or books, there’s something for every creative on campus.
Jonathan Wilson, outreach and distance coordinator, and Lydia Gwyn, student engagement and instruction librarian, shared some upcoming events they’re excited about.
This weekend, March 6-7, the library will host its annual Rare Book and Map Event.
“These are books you normally can’t access without a key,” Gwyn said.
Attendees will have a chance to view the library’s impressive collection of rare books, maps and microfilms. Maps on display during the event will include Watauga, State of Franklin and a map tracing the suffragette movement.
On April 1, the library will host a reception celebrating its annual poetry contest winners. Anyone is welcome to come and hear the winners announced, listen to poetry and view the poems on display in the gallery space.
Gwyn particularly noted an upcoming Craft Supply Swap event, a collaboration between students and the library’s weekly Crafternoon event. Individuals can donate craft supplies they no longer need, which will be held in Innovation Commons.
“Students can come and take what they want,” Gwyn said.
This event aims for a sustainable approach to crafting and connects the crafting community on campus.
Wilson explained that the Sherrod Book Club is another event he looks forward to. This semester, the club is reading Ocean Vuong’s The Emperor of Gladness. The first 30 people to register for the book club will receive a free copy of the book ahead of the first meeting on April 15.
“We want to provide a place that feels like home, where students can grow and learn,” Wilson said.
Events at Sherrod Library allow for connection and growth.
“Having that piece of my week is so stress-relieving,” Gwyn said, referring to Crafternoons.
In the upcoming month, students are encouraged to make time for learning and socializing at these events, a perfect way to handle mid-semester stress.
