Despite taking 14 more shots than the opponents, forcing 17 turnovers and working the ball well with 15 assists, the Lady Bucs lost to the College of Charleston on Saturday 78-61.
Down by two at the half, the Lady Cougars stormed back in the second period, scoring 51 points and outscoring the Lady Bucs 28-11 in the closing minutes.
Forward Wilma Simpson victimized the Bucs inside with 18 points and 13 rebounds (nine on the defensive end.)
Guards Becky Wollenberg and Sara Weaver got into the act, too, with 16 and 17 points, respectively.
Twelve of Weaver’s points came from outside the arc.
However, a strong defensive effort from the Cougars kept the Bucs in check, forcing ETSU into 34 percent shooting.
The Cougars kept particular eye on leading scorer Erin Thurman, who shot only 5 of 14 from the field (four of nine from three point range.)
ETSU was also victimized on the boards, as College of Charleston took a plus five rebounding advantage.
However the game was close throughout the first half, with the lead seesawing back and forth.
Although the Lady Bucs were able to stay close in the opening minutes, a jump shot from Lindsey Baber tie the game and the Cougars never looked back.
A key statistic proved to be points from the free throw line, where College of Charleston converted 19-22 attempts, while ETSU made just 6-15.
