The Lady Bucs put 82 points on the score board last Wednesday night, unfortunately they gave up 95 to the Furman Lady Paladins offense, falling to 3-15 and 3-6 in conference action.
The Lady Bucs shot a season high 50 percent (32-64) from the field, but allowed the Lady Paladins (11-7, 5-4) to shoot 56 percent (40-71) from the field including 66.7 percent in the first half that had the Lady Bucs down 51-29 at intermission.
“I’m very disappointed on the defensive end,” head coach Karen Kemp said.
“Offensively I thought we did a decent job, anytime you put up 82 points you think you’ll come out with a victory.”
The Lady Bucs trailed by as many as 25 points in the second half, but began to make their run late in the game.
With two free throws by Shona Johnson, completing a 17-7 run, the Lady Bucs found themselves within 10, but only 1:02 remained in the game.
Furman would hit enough of their free throws in the final minute hold on for a 13-point win.
Even though Kemp believes the team needs to work harder on the defensive side of the ball, she is pleased with the team’s work ethic.
“I feel the team works hard . out there on the floor,” she said. “The intensity is there, our young players have come in and been a spark for us.”
The Lady Bucs were led in the scoring column by forward Megan Jackson, who tied her career-high with 19 points and added a game high nine rebounds.
Kemp has also been pleased with Jackson’s play as of late.
“Megan Jackson in the past had not been a scorer,” she said. “The last three or four games she has picked up her offensive game, defensively she has always been strong.”
Joining Jackson in double digit scoring column were freshmen Jessica Lonon (12) and Racquel Ellis (10).
The Lady Paladins were led by Kim Lawrence with 14 points and also had six other players score more than eight points. Lady Bucs play at Wofford Wednesday.
