Do you have a great knowledge of cutlery etiquette or do you mostly just eat with your hands?
Do you know how to properly introduce yourself to people, or do you just open your mouth, make some unrecognizable grunting noises and amicably beat your chest?
Well, if you have a problem with one or more of these social interactions, then the College of Applied Science and Technology in conjunction with the office of career placement and Internship services has an event that you will not want to miss.
The event, “Wining and Dining in Corporate America,” is a reception that will address the familiar, but not so often practiced, skills of corporate dining etiquette and introduction etiquette.
In our fast-paced society, people do not often sit down around a table to have a meal, so these skills are in need of sharpening for many, especially those getting ready to enter the job world.
“Many people in business and industry realize that students don’t know how to handle themselves at a dining event,” said Amelia Brown, associate dean of the College of Applied Science and Technology and a corporate etiquette and international protocol consultant., “So this event will be beneficial to those that need the help.”
According to Brown, many students in lunch or dinner interviews failed to get the job because of flaws in their dining mannerisms.
Also during the reception will be a session aiding people in making themselves more comfortable introducing themselves properly to others.
Of course, no one would like to be publicly embarrassed or lose a potential job opportunity because of something as minute as using ones finger to push rice onto their fork, or because of a weak handshake.
“With this event, the objective is to learn how to handle yourself in a dining situation and make a lasting impression,’to knock em’ dead,” Brown said.
“Wining and Dining in Corporate America” will be held on March 6 in the Adelphia Centre at Millenium Park. The reception will begin at 4:30 p.m. and dinner is at 5 p.m. Business attire is required.
The deadline for registration is Feb. 1 and the fee is $15.
