If you are looking for a competitive edge in your classes. then let Student Support Services help in all of your academic endeavors.
Student Support Services (SSS) offers several programs to help the struggling undergraduate.
Located on the third floor of the Culp University Center, SSS offers free, one-on-one tutoring in any of the general education core subjects, such as biology, chemistry, math, physics, foreign languages, psychology and others.
Tutors are available from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday.
“Before I went to tutoring, I never used to open my book, but after I started going to tutoring, I actually opened the book because my tutor made the subject matter understandable,” one student said.
Another student was surprised “at how helpful Student Support Services is.”
A tutor commented, “It’s obviously not about the money. It’s about the interaction between the student and the tutor, about helping someone with an especially difficult concept and seeing the light bulb going off in their head.”
“Students are encouraged to come for their tutors now; don’t wait until its too late, when either you get a bad grade or we run out of tutors,” said Education Specialist Lisa Norris.
In addition to tutoring, SSS also offers Supplemental Instruction, or SI, in such high-risk subjects such as Calculus I, Biology I & II, Chemistry I &II, History 2010/2020, and Math 1080. All subjects are held in the Sherrod Library Group Viewing Room 354, except for the history sections, which are held in Lucille Clement Hall. As with the tutoring, this service is also free.
Students who take advantage of SI earn higher course grades and withdraw less often. Statistics have shown that the average grade for SI participants at ETSU was one letter-grade higher than the class average, based on those who attended three or more SI sessions.
Nexus, a special program for first time freshman, offers such services such as mentoring, career counseling, academic advising and group meeting. Nexus is located in the Advisement Resources Career Center (ARC), on the second floor of the Culp Center.
To be eligible for Nexus, students must be income-eligible, and/or have a diagnosed disability.
Preference is given to students with ACT scores between 19-25 who have not chosen a major.
