“The Miss Universe Organization, producers of the MISS UNIVERSEr, MISS USAr and MISS TEEN USAr competitions, is an international company that advances and supports today’s women. These women are savvy, goal-oriented and aware. The contestants who become part of the Miss Universe Organization display those characteristics in their everyday lives, both as individuals who participate in the competitions to advance their careers, personal and humanitarian goals, and as women who seek to improve the lives of others.”
Fascinating. This information was pulled from the www.missteenusa.com Web site, where you can also watch videos and buy photographs of all of the Miss Teen USA contestants in bikinis.
And before you ask how exactly Miss Teen USA helps improve the image of these savvy goal-oriented women I am going to go ahead and tell you that they do so by parading them around like meat in tight swimsuits while flaunting their large breasts, tiny waists and tight behinds.
I, for one, am glad they have today’s woman in mind.
Sure, I am certain that a lot of the women that actually participate in these events do have at least half of a brain and are negatively stereotyped all of the time. But honestly, is there any question as to why the negative stigma surrounds these pageants?
The Web site goes on to state that “the organization [Miss Universe Organization] has redefined itself, just as it is redefining the world’s views of the women.”
At least they got that last part right.
As I am sure most of the world has already heard, including South Africa, Miss Teen South Carolina was a shining example of what not to strive for as a woman during the live Aug. 24 telecast on NBC.
During a question and answer portion of the competition, one of the few parts in which we are supposed to see if these women have anything else to their credit besides their good looks and mediocre singing abilities, Miss Teen South Carolina was asked the following question: “Recent polls have shown that a fifth of Americans can’t locate the U.S. on a world map. Why do you think that is?” And Miss Teen South Carolina replied:
“I personally believe,
That ‘U.S. Americans’ are unable to do so, because uh, some … people out there in our nation don’t have maps. And, uh. I believe that our ed-education like such as in South Africa and uh, ‘The Iraq,’ everywhere like, such as and;
I believe that they should uh
Our education over here – in the U.S. — should help the U.S.
Or should help South Africa,
And should help ‘the Iraq’ and the Asian countries. So we will be able to build up our future … for it.”
And yes, it was even more confusing while viewing the actual video footage, which can currently be viewed all over YouTube.
But at least she looked good answering the question. That is at least if you are male, were wearing earplugs and didn’t feel your last hope for humanity as a whole being painfully crushed into oblivion.
I certainly don’t think that this pageant should serve as a model for what any American woman should strive to be.
The funniest thing to me about all of this is that she still placed third runner up.
To Miss Teen South Carolina’s defense, she was probably nervous, and I sincerely hope that she didn’t actually hear the question due to her nerves “Everything came at me at once, I was overwhelmed, I made a mistake,” she admitted to the Today Show during an interview after the incident.
However, when asked during the same interview if she would answer the question again, her second answer wasn’t exactly the answer I would have had prepared after making such a colossal boo-boo: “Personally my friends and I we know exactly where the United States is on our map and I don’t know anyone else who doesn’t. And if the statistics are correct I believe there should be more emphasis on geography in our education so people will learn how to read maps better.”
But I do think that Miss Teen South Carolina makes a wonderful point.
Yes, our education in this country seems to clearly be lacking if those statistics are accurate. But sadly, this lack of education doesn’t apply solely to geography, but to the exponential increase of ignorance of this country as a whole. The kind of ignorance that allows beautiful girls to flaunt their physical assets on television under the guise of some humanitarian effort by a Donald Trump to, what was it . oh yeah, “redefine the world’s view of women.”
Good job, country. Good job.
