For the past seven years, undergraduate students at ETSU have had the opportunity to present their research at the annual Boland Undergraduate Research symposium.
This year, the ETSU Honors College, the Office of Research & Sponsored programs, and the Jay Boland Honors Endowment have come together to sponsor the eighth annual ETSU Boland Undergraduate Research Symposium. The symposium is open to all undergraduate students who are in any stage of research, from project ideas to completion.
The symposium has grown from 26 presenters in 2006 to 95 in 2012. A showing of paintings, photos and sculpture by artists was added in 2008. Since 2010, the symposium added performances by musicians, dancers, poets and theater performers. The symposium is unique in providing active presentation styles for undergraduates.
It provides students with a venue to present their research in a non-competitive, interactive and informal environment. The goal of the symposium is to encourage the exchange of ideas among researchers. Students who present their research have the opportunity to receive constructive feedback and ideas that could help further their research.
For the purposes of this symposium, student research is broadly considered to be any kind of original scholarly work, including, but not limited to, works of art, performance pieces, technological advances, and more traditional library- and laboratory-based research approaches. Students who are interested in the research process, but who may not yet have participated in original research are encouraged to attend the symposium or help moderate sessions.
Presentations will be in the form of displayed artwork, 15-minute performance, or 15-minute oral presentation, dependent on the discipline and form of the research. Students may also make thesis presentations, which are 30 minutes in length, including five minutes of question-answer time. Presentations can be scheduled for morning or afternoon sessions.
This year’s symposium will take place April 2 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Millennium Centre. Breakfast and lunch are provided to student presenters.
The deadline for registration is March 14.
