The Buccaneers are now 10-7 in the season after losing to the No. 31 University of Central Florida 4-3 on Friday, April 7, becoming 3-3 at home and breaking the eight game winning streak.
The non-conference match started at 2 p.m. and the first ETSU win came from David Gonzalez (Barcelona, Spain) and Wenceslao Albin (Salliquelo, Argentina). The pair defeated UFC’s Chris Barrus and Enrique Paya 6-3 in the doubles competition. After that David Biosca (Sant Fruitos de Bage, Spain) and Miguel Ests (Caracas, Venezuela) came out on top with a 7-5 victory over Korey Lovett and Kalman Body.
Coming away with the only two ETSU wins in the singles competition were No. 61 Biosca and sophomore powerhouse Gonzalez. Gonzalez won the match in two straight sets 7-5, 6-3. Senior Biosca and No. 70 Korey Lovett for the UFC Knights battled for three sets but ultimately Biosca earned the point for ETSU winning the match 6-3, 1-6, 6-4.
In the second match of the weekend the Bucs took on UNC Wilmington in Johnson City. The Buccaneers swept the singles competition and beat UNCW 4-0. After the two non-conference matches ETSU is 11-7 and continues to go undefeated in the SoCon.
All six singles matches were won by Bucs. Gonzalez defeated Leon Back in two sets, adding to his winning streak. While No. 115 Robert Herrera (Barcelona, Spain), Biosca and Albin also won their respective matches in two sets.
Diego Nunez (Monterrey, Mexico) and Herrera won in the doubles competition beating their opponents 6-3. With a 7-5 victory over their opponents, Biosca and Este gained another point for the blue and gold. Gabe Hocevar and Michael Copeland were the only UNCW players to beat any Buccaneers. They defeated Gonzalez and Albin in doubles competition 6-2.
The men’s team will travel to Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro, Tennessee Wednesday, April 12. Conference play will resume Friday, April 12 when the Bucs face off with The Citadel in Johnson City with a starting time of 2 p.m.
