After defeating Wofford in Spartanburg, S.C. on April 6, the ETSU women’s tennis team traveled to Greenville to take on Furman.
In the game against Wofford, the Bucs defeated the Terriers 6-1.
ETSU made a statement in doubles play as all three pairs defeated their opponents with less than two losses.
Marina Espana (Castellar Del Valles, Spain) and Ioanna Markesini (Athens, Greece) defeated Wofford’s Cassidy Hicks and Kalli Karas 6-1. Teammate Alory Pereira (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Yi Chi Ma (Kaohsiung, Taiwan) also defeated their opponents (Catherine Martin and Lauren Reid) 6-1. And ETSU’s Jayde Viccars (Glen Waverly, Australia) and Melissa Esguerra (Derrimutt, Australia) defeated Wofford’s Taylor Carlson and Emily Erickson 6-2.
The Bucs dominated in singles play also, winning five out of the six matches.
After defeating Wofford the Bucs were tied with Furman for No.1 in the Southern Conference before they met on Saturday, April 8.
In doubles play, the matches got within two points but the Bucs could not capitalize. Espana and Markesini were defeated 6-4, Pereira and Ma 6-4 and Viccars and Esguerra were defeated 7-5.
In the six singles matches, ETSU only claimed two victories. Espana and Esguerra both defeated their opponent in singles play.
With the overall effort of the Bucs, they could not hold off the Paladins. Furman defeated the Bucs 5-2 and moved to 19-5 overall and 6-0 in the SoCon. ETSU is now 10-5 overall and 5-1 in the SoCon.
The next match for the Bucs will be on April 13 against Western Kentucky.
The match on April 15 against UNCG will determine what seed the Bucs will be when they enter the Southern Conference Tournament on April 21
