When you go to college, everyone tells you over and over again to get involved in something, but how important is it actually? In my college experience, I’ve learned that you should get involved with something, but you should focus on quality over quantity.
Everyone has at least one thing they’re passionate about, and joining an organization that links you to people who are also passionate about that same thing can vastly improve your college experience and introduce you to lifelong friends.
For me, that organization has been the ETSU Marching Bucs, and joining has easily been the best decision of my college career. Being part of marching band has allowed me to continue playing music and instantly connected me with a large group of people who had similar interests as me. I would not have gotten through college without the fun experiences and the support system I found through the Marching Bucs.
College is a great time to try new things and meet new people, but burning yourself out joining a dozen random clubs isn’t the way to go. Organizations are like friends: It’s better to have several really good friends than a dozen meaningless friendships. It’s better to choose the activities that are most important to you.
If you’re not sure what you want to do at first, go to a few meetings of all the groups you’re interested in and narrow it down to your favorites.
Going to college is often an overwhelming experience; new students worry about their classes, being in a new place and making friends. Joining some kind of organization or club can alleviate some of that stress by providing a community of built-in friendships and connections.
