Women’s soccer won 5-2 against the Delaware State Hornets on Sunday, Sept. 8.
Buc goals came from four different players, including freshman Anjela Kricak (Krusevac, Serbia). This win has the Bucs at a 2-2-2 streak so far this season.
“Similar to our home opener, we scored 4 goals and 3 were by new players,” said head coach Adam Sayers. “There were a lot of positives to draw from this game. I really believe in these players, and I believe in the potential of this team.”
The team played well, considering the many factors that made the game more difficult for them, including the turf grass and extreme heat. Ten minutes into the game, the Hornets scored, but did not stay in the lead for long.
Kricak scored the first goal of her collegiate career within the first 15 minutes from 40 yards away. Kricak found her second goal near the break, leading the Bucs 2-1 during the first half.
“It was difficult to get going again with only one days rest after a very tough game on Friday,” said junior Sarah Connelly (Ballygowan, Northern Ireland). “We started quite slowly and the first half was pretty poor by our standards, but the second half was much better.”
With eight goals last season, Connelly was the leading goal maker of 2018.
“I would love to keep that title,” said Connelly. “I had a great pre season, but with the regular season I’ve struggled quite a bit.”
With only three minutes into the second half, freshman Momoko Horiuchi (Paris, Tennessee) scored the Bucs third goal followed by Connelly’s shot. The Bucs’ final goal was scored by grad student Pamela Penaloza (Bogota, Colombia) with 26 seconds to spare.
ETSU takes the field again Friday, Sept. 13, at 7 p.m. at Summers-Taylor Stadium against Radford.
