The Student Government Association held a senate meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 1, in Brown Hall regarding BucFund and a handful of resolutions.

The meeting was called to order at 4:02 p.m. and began with guest speakers Dean David Atkins of University Libraries and Student Trustee Cristopher Santana. Atkins outlined several projects in the works for Sherrod Library, including opening more meeting and study spaces, creation of a “makerspace” and acquisition of a VR setup for both study and play. Atkins explained that these plans are in various stages of development, so their implementation has not yet been settled.

Santana outlined recent Board of Trustees’ resolutions, including the adoption of an Audit Compliance Charter and an Internal Audit Plan. Santana described these as safety and cost-cutting measures designed to catch and deal with discrepancies before external audits are necessary.

After the guest speakers the Senate shifted attention to BucFund Allocation. The Buccaneer Fund, or BucFund, is a pool of money collected from students each year used for organization development and events. Each organization must apply for this funding and defend their request before a committee before it is sent to the Senate for a vote. Representatives from multiple university-related organizations attended the meeting to witness the final vote on their funding.

The Chinese Students and Scholars Association received $3,300 for various games, competitions and diversity projects on campus. The Davis Community Council received $500 for a fall gathering, as well as the Carter-Stone-Powell Community Council. The Pre-law Society received $1,170 for assistance with attending a conference, and after questioning and debate, the Organization of Student Representatives secured $2,800 for the Quillen College of Medicine to fly Pipeline Program mentors to a national conference.
