Every week, it seems there’s always some new political scandal or blunder, particularly from the White House.
I think keeping up with politics is extremely important, but even I have grown to tune out the constant noise of political chaos in the last few months.
This past week, the noise was loud enough to call my attention again when I heard President Trump had supposedly asked the president of Ukraine, President Zelensky, to help him gain compromising information on Joe Biden and his son, Hunter Biden, during a phone call back in July.
According to CBS News, just days before this phone call, Trump decided to withhold almost $400 million of support for the Ukrainian war with Russia. Trump also claimed that he would have his personal attorney, Rudy Giuliani, and Attorney General William Barr, would contact President Zelensky, who was newly elected earlier in 2019, about the possible Biden investigation.
The release of this information is leading to talks among Congress about a possible impeachment for the violation of several laws, according to CBS News.
Trump’s behavior in this situation is despicable; he clearly was using a new leader to get him to do his own personal bidding.
I highly doubt withholding funding for Ukraine days before the call with President Zelensky was a coincidence; he wanted to put pressure on the Ukrainian leader to help him find dirt on Biden, so it would potentially help his own reelection campaign.
World leaders do this all the time to negotiate and get what they want, but the difference here is that they aren’t supposed to do it for their own personal gain. Trump was willing to withhold needed aid to Ukraine in their conflict against Russia for his own plot to bring down Joe Biden, who is no doubt a possible threat to his re-election.
This behavior shows he is willing to sacrifice the possible betterment of millions of people for his own benefit, which isn’t surprising at this point, but it is still disgraceful. If he is willing to turn to a foreign leader to take down an opponent, I can only imagine what else he has done for his own benefit.
As for possible impeachment, I’m not convinced he will be convicted because there doesn’t seem to be enough concrete evidence based off the phone call transcript alone to prove that he legally did anything wrong. However, based off how many controversies and scandals he has been at the center of, I believe that President Trump has broken laws in the past, even if he has always been able to hide his legal guilt one way or another.
In my eyes, there is absolutely no doubt that President Trump is ethically guilty for the situation with Ukraine, even if he’s not found legally guilty.
