ETSU’s National Student Advertising team placed in the top eight of the National Student Advertising Competition semi-finals on Thursday, and now they prepare for the national competition.

This semester, students from the ETSU Departments of Media and Communication, Art and Design and Digital Media collaborated on an advertising solution as part of the NSAC, with Adobe as this year’s client. The team won first in their district on April 29. On May 7, the team competed against 17 universities for a top eight spot to advance to nationals.

“I’m so ecstatic for our team to be moving on to the NSAC finals,” Bailey DeVore, senior media and communication student and the team’s lead copywriter, said. “Our heart, determination and strength keeps on showing as we progress through this competition. We really poured all that we had into this campaign, and that continues to shine. I’m honored to be competing on this team of amazingly talented people at the national level.”

NSAC is a collegiate advertising competition that takes place each year and is held by the American Advertising Federation. Due to COVID-19, this year’s competition is being conducted virtually.

This is the second time in three years that ETSU students have competed at the finals.

At finals, which will be held over the summer, the first-place team wins $3,500, second-place wins $2,500 and third-place wins $2,000. Additional awards go to teams for exceptional work in areas such as marketing research, best presentation and more.

“The students didn’t settle on their first, second or even third iteration of ideas,” Jonathan Hounshell, a faculty advisor and digital media professor, said. “When other teams would have stopped reaching, our team reached deeper. They have fought so hard to refine at every turn, and that’s what it takes to run against the top schools at nationals.”

Due to NSAC rules, elements of the teams’ advertising campaign cannot be disclosed.
